LSI stands for Latent Semantic Indexing. Latent Semantic Indexing is an indexing and retrieval method that uses complex mathematical models and algorithms to figure out the meaning of collection of text. The whole concept of LSI is based on the basic principle that words that are used in the same contexts tend to have similar meanings.
In case of Search Engines LSI is a way to view, analyze and rank Web Pages in a more human like manner. LSI algorithms analyze Web Pages for synonyms and other related words that not only help them to determine the genre and meaning of the Web Page but also to analyze the Value of it according to specific topic (keyword). For example, a Web Page about Internet Marketing, when analyzed with LSI, should logically also contain words such as "Online Marketing", "Web Marketing", "Search Engine Marketing" and "Web Promotion".
LSI can have a significant impact on the ranking of your Web Pages in the Search Engines. It is highly recommended that in order to attain good rankings for any keyword, you should use variations of your keyword and synonyms in the Web Page. That makes it easier for Search Engines to determine the topic of your website and increases the value of your website for that keyword.
